Exodus 9 Pestilence, Boils and Hail, Oh My!

God is faithful to keep His promises and demonstrates His strength to accomplish His will on the earth. Is it fair that God hardens Pharaoh's heart and then punishes him?  If God is a good guy (and He IS!), how does that work?

Prayer Changes Things

Prayer involves us in what God is doing in eternity.

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When we read Psalm 133,
or The Gospel according to John in chapter 17,
we begin to see that the powerful witness of the people of God is shown in our unity.

We gather around worship of the God we love,
and demonstrate that love for one another,.

The strength of our witness is established in community.
As we share the historic truth about Him,
people's lives are changed.

Ascension: the parting message of Christ

The story of the resurrection is marked by the departure of Jesus Christ 40 days after He rose from the dead.  He had some things to say toward the end of His time among His followers.

What would your last words be?
Would you hope that people would hear and listen to your 'parting shot'?

Still Alive after Easter Sunday

Jesus lived among the believers and was seen by others (as many as 500 at one time) for 40 days after the resurrection on the first day of the week, a day we have come to call Easter Sunday.

Today's sermon is about how from Egypt to Easter God has been coming to people and sought to interact with them.  Our hearts full of grief and sorrow and sometimes just busy-ness can distract us from God at work in our lives even today.

The Name of God

Moses, at the burning bush, asks God
for a way to proove that He has met with the Almighty.
He asks for a name.
God's response is to declare His nature; His history;
and He shares a name so essential to who He is,
that there are Jewish worshipers, even today,
who refuse to utter that name with their mouths,
out of respect.
The name has become known to the world as Jehova or Yahway
which is the same word with different pronunciation
because that name went so long un-pronounced,
that people forgot which vowels go where.

Still, even in the Christian printings of the Jewish scriptures
(the Old Testament) this name is translated LORD
where the Jewish tradition would say "Adonai"
rather than pronounce YHWH.

There's more to the story you can read in Exodus 3
and have a listen to the podcasts below:

Exodus 3 That Burning Bush

God sees, and hears, and knows what people are going through,
He has come to deliver us, and bring us to Himself, through relationship, through Jesus Christ.

The presence of God makes things holy.
We have fellowship with God when we respond to the fact of forgiveness of sins in Jesus' name.

Moses stopped to notice something unique
and it changed his life.
When he stopped to look at THAT burning bush,
he encountered the living God.
Moses responded to God in faith: knowledge, belief and trust.

Moses in Egypt: The Setting, The Unique Voice, The Calling

We are reading God's words to know God's thoughts
To adjust how we think, in order to reflect the ideas of God
We want to be like Jesus.

The 8th Century BC writer Isaiah wrote this:
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 'For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.' "

We find these words included in the anthology of historic literature called "The Bible"

In Chapter 1 & 2 of the Exodus story (Part of an aural tradition, written down by Moses) we read the circumstances associated with the first 80 years of Moses' life.

Part 1 The Setting:
Egypt sometime around the 15th Century BC

Part 2 The Unique Voice
Moses identifies with the oppressed people: Israel

The Book of Exodus

As we look to the historic reports of the relationship between God and humanity, we begin a season of exploring the book titled Exodus in the bible.  This second book in the 66 book anthology of literature, is called the bible points to the deliverance of the nation Israel from bondage in Egypt.

This Sunday was an intro to the ongoing story about God and His friend Abraham, who believed God at His word and trusted Him.  And the descendants of Abraham, who trust and follow God.

In relationship to Christ and His death as sin, His burial and His resurrection, according to God's word, these ideas also accrue to our benefit, when we trust and follow God.

So we begin our study of the book of the Exodus...
