Romans 5 "Healed"

Part 1
"...while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Part 2
Sin still counts whether you know that there is a law or not. Drinking poison still kills you, even if you don't understand the chemistry.  But there is a cure...

Part 3
Just as sin reigned in death, grace also reigns through righteousness leading to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Part 4
Jesus died so we could wake-up from slavery and walk-out of sin.

Part 4
The power and instrument that is received
when we DO receive His testimony,
those 'Words of God 'must be followed exactly.

The revolution in what is received:
Those who receive the testimony that comes from above,
have their hearts and lives wide open to the Baptism of God the Spirit.
They discover that "God is True" !

Romans 2 "Goose and Gander"

Part 1
The scripture describes the various sins of people who are given-over to depravity.

Part 2
The scripture describes that, when people knowingly walked away from God,
God released people into their passions

Part 3
There are negative consequences to all unbridled passions;
and we all test positive for sinning in this way.

Part 4
We are Christians when we follow Christ,
because we believe in Him.
His finished work: our justification.
His ongoing work as He guides our choices in life: our sanctification

Part 5
When we read Romans we hear God speaking to the church
about our manner of following Jesus;
and we learn about how sin dulls the senses
so that we do not see the signs of judgment coming.

Romans 1 "There's Good News and There's Bad News"

Part 1
There is good news and there is bad news

Part 2
Because of (faith in God's grace),
you freely, willingly and joyfully
do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things,

love and praise the God who has shown you such grace.

Part 3
There is a bitter pill to take for the good result that one hopes for…
In order to receive this healing remedy, this life in place of death,
you would have to recognise you were sick in the first place.

Part 4
Those who refuse to be saved
in the way revealed by his mercy
must be consumed
in the way revealed by his justice." ~Adam Clarke

Part 5
The 'bad news' counts for every one of us:
That "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,
who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth."

Part 6
The bad news is that the test has come back
and we all test positive for S.I.N.
The good news is that His mercy is available in Christ's death.
The good news is that His mercy is available in Christ's resurrection.

Romans 1 "Justice"

Part 1
consult with the scriptures and the Holy Spirit as you live your life and make decisions 'out-of faith' and 'into faith' --'stepping-out in faith' in the gospel - For in (the gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written: "The righteous shall live by faith." (Rom 1:17)

Part 2
"The righteous shall live by faith"
Paul evokes the writings of Habakkuk (2:4).
He is setting-up a principle that stands throughout scripture:
We are saved by God!
"the gospel… is the power of God for salvation" ( v16 Rom 1)

Part 3
We are saved by God's grace, through faith:
"the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes"

Part 4
The way that God makes a condemned people,
to stand right before Him,
is revealed in the Gospel.

Part 5
Sins are the symptoms of sin.
Our behaviours are signposts to the reality
that we have departed from relationship with God.
THIS is THE sin.
Healing the broken relationship with God, involves returning from idolatry.
THEN, the symptoms remediate.

Part 6
God is calling us, not to rail against the symptoms,
but to minister to the need we have;
the need that others have;
to repent of sin and return to God.

Romans 1 Called to be Saints

Part 1
Our introduction to Paul and his calling from God

Part 2
God's words to Ananias in Acts 9 confirm Paul's salvation and calling

Part 3
We are called into community as followers of Jesus Christ

Part 4
'sent people' reach the world! "including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ"

Part 5
The word for saints is "hagiois" literally 'holy ones'.
We are called to be Holy.
There are two ideas in the background here:
1. Justification and 2. Sanctification

Part 6
God calls us to be 'holy ones' and he doesn’t leave us to fail at that.
He makes us holy, and he structures our lives to show it.

Part 4
These are the LAST DAYS (an idea taken from Joel, from Peter and, as we will see, from Paul)
We are to live like it's real.
The LORD is coming back to bring justice, which means judgement.

Part 5
In 2 Pet 3:15-16, Peter confirms that the writing of Paul is scripture.

James 1 Suffering

James, the brother of Jesus, has important things to say about suffering

Part 1
The introduction of the letter written by James.  Why start this way?

Part 2
James doesn't depend on his family ties, but identifies belief and specifically, 'servanthood' as the basis of relationship with Jesus.

Part 3
Why you ARE a Christian is why you STAY a Christian.
The root of your identity is why you endure challenges to a walk of faith.

Part 4
The followers of Jesus, depend upon their identity in Christ, in order to withstand difficulty when trials do come.

Isaiah 58 God's Chosen Fast

The practice of fasting
is present in both the Old and New Testaments.
Jesus teaches on fasting saying "when you fast..."
and not 'if ' you fast.
There are some practical instructions found in the bible
about the motives and means of fasting...

Part 1
Lent involves a spirit of penitence for some.
But in light of the sacrifice of Christ, this is unwarranted.
But fasting still has a place in modern Christian practice.

Part 2
What happens to people as they draw near to God?
There is bad news and there is good news...

Part 3
If we were to consider the bible like a compass:
A point of reference that demonstrates which way is north,
Then Prayer and fasting may be considered
as
a means of remembering…

...to take the compass out of our pockets and refer to it...
...to navigate according to true north...
...to adjust our paths.

Part 4
In fasting, as we deny our fleshly desires for food,
we are reminded…

Part 5
Fasting just might be
the lost spiritual discipline of the 21st Century Church

Ephesians Chapter 4 and Spiritual Disciplines

As an annual remembrance of the significance of Easter comes around, many people begin to speak about the season leading-up to Easter called 'Lent'.  Often we will hear a friend or neighbour ask a question something like: 'What are you giving-up for Lent'?

In the Christian church since the reformation, there is a recognisable resistance to religious acts that claim to bring reward or benefit.  After all, the bible does teach in the Letter to the Ephesians: "we are saved by grace through faith and not by works."

And yet James admonishes us to live out what we believe, to live differently because of faith, when he writes: "...be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

What is the significance of exercising any practical discipline in the pursuit of a spiritual goal?  Is there any realistic benefit, spiritually, to our efforts to live life a certain way?

Acts 22 Identity

Paul shares his testimony three times from chapter 22, up until the end of the book of Acts.
His identity is bound-up in:

  1. Who he was
  2. The realization about what God has done for him, in the person of Jesus Christ;
  3. And who he has become, as he follows his LORD.

How have you changed, since you became a Christian?
What about your identity is different?
The people who knew you then, what would they say about the person you are now?
What about you now, is different than who you were last season of your life?
