At the Gate of the Year

We all consider New Year as an opportunity for a fresh start
and God has a plan for a similar kind of recovery from the past
it involves hearing from Him
and turning away from selfish desires and facing our fears
and turning toward Him
to follow closely after our loving heavenly Father
God's plan is for hope and a future...
...through the death for our sins, and burial and resurrection
of the grown Christmas-baby Jesus, the Christ;
Just the way God said it would happen beforehand.

The Nativity

God moved heaven and earth
to keep His promises about the messiah
Mary and Joseph heard from God
and said "Yes" to His will for their lives
Following God led Joseph and Mary to a place of possible despair
God chose lowly messengers to bring the encouraging good news about His unfolding plan.

Baptisms!

Diane Fairley, Scott Gilles, Bill Mackay and Sarah Rae passed throught the waters of Christian baptism on Saturday 14th December.

Having made the decision to trust the work of God in Jesus Christ: His death for our sin according to the scriptures, His burial, and His resurrection on the third day according to His promise in the Bible; these people publicly declared their faith in Christ, to the whole community of Alva, at the swimming pool in the Ochil Leisure Centre.

The Alloa Advertiser covered the story:
Alva Baptist Church holds ceremony at Ochil Leisure Centre

It was very touching and encouraging to hear the personal testimonies of the believer who were baptised.  Many familiar faces and some new friends heard the gospel; and saw it in action!

Luke 1 The Annunciation to Mary

Faithful messengers bring good news of God's favour at Christmas.
Mary hears some good news that echoes the epic work God is doing in the world.  After over 400 years of prophetic silence in the scriptures, God comes to a young woman who wasn't looking for God, but finds favour anyway.
The gospel of Jesus Christ begins it's human-ness with Jesus' faithful mother, God's faithful servant.
Miracle baby, born to die...and live!

Kirkin' of the Clackmannanshire Council

Our local County Government visited the Sunday worship service at Alva's Baptist fellowship.

We celebrated the practical work of God to reconcile man to Himself through Jesus Christ.

We taught a selection of scripture that we believe pertains to human government and the responsibility of people who consider themselves God's people, to conduct themselves in a way that supports good governance, while remaining accountable to the LORD.

Give a listen and see what you think...

How-to Bear Lasting Fruit

What is the fruit of relationship with God?
If me 'planted in the rich, healthy, soil of God'
is a good and fruitful deal,
what does the fruit of that relationship look like?

We propose that LOVE is the litmus test of lasting fruit.
Love IS the fruit.

Relationships are the proof of the love.
Loving followers, of a loving God,
loving every candidate for adoption into God's loving family.
(God so loved the world...)

How does that work?

I luu…luuu…lurrrrrrrve you.

Love.
Why is the word so hard to say for some people?
What is the meaning of this tiny word?

From greeting cards to bibles, the meaning varies.

This series shines light on "Love" from the pages of Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians:

Spiritual 'Things'

1 Corinthians 12
Some call them 'gifts'. But it's wider than that...
These points of empowerment of the church by the Holy Spirit.
The Grace of God manifest through the varied and common activities of the Body of Christ.
These mixes of divine unction, skills, and passion that come to characterize the 'offices', 'callings' or 'job descriptions' we would expect to be filled by people empowered with spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 12 The Work of the Holy Spirit

When we look at the 'gifts of the Spirit' in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 we need to acquaint ourselves with the Gift-giver, the Holy Spirit.  Once we understand WHO this person is, with HIS will, and feelings and thoughts and actions, then we begin to recognize HIM at work in us.

The sinner, saved by grace, (only through the redemptive work of God, through the life of Jesus Christ and HIS death on the cross) has fellowship with the Holy Spirit, who is God.  God the Holy Spirit works in us through faith in Christ.

Here is some scriptural instruction on the work of the Holy Spirit:

1 Corinthians 12 Gifts of the Spirit

The sermon this Sunday was mostly about the gift-giver:
The Holy Spirit. Completely scriptural instruction on the Person of the Holy Spirit.

The normal-ness of the church, empowered in every aspect of service and every activity through the gifts that He gives.  The person, not the phenomenon of people responding to Him in wild ways.

The person:
referred to with masculine pronouns
who thinks, feels, and has a will
who is separate from God the Father or Christ the Son
who is the presence of God when we worship

We focused on the truth of scripture that God is the one who makes the church work. The simple reality that everything that happens in the church is The Spirit of God leading the church.  Often without fanfare, in unamazing ways, but when He does it, with eternal results.  This is just the beginning of the teaching about how to be the church yielded to the Spirit of God; led by Him.

There was a strong sense of the manifestation of the Spirit of God in the room as we focused on Him, that you may not get from this podcast, but the room was focused and alert and responsive to this message. We hope this helps your understanding of the church empowered by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34 Worthy

In chapter 11 of his letter to Corinth, the Apostle Paul writes to the church about various aspects of worship.  Last week The Holy Spirit addressed the personal freedoms and corporate responsibilities of individual worshipers, through the pen of Paul.

This week we look at the 'Lord's Table' or 'communion'.

Paul speaks about unity and division in the church. There is simple instruction on sharing and courtesy. Also we address how one can become worthy to enter into fellowship with God. (Hint: we cant do it, so God did it for us) The cross of Christ removes the barrier between us, and the God who is perfect and loving and will not compromise.

He is going to deal fairly with every injustice.  We know that our selfish or fearful actions won't stand before an honest judge who is holy and just.  We have all sinned and if we got only what we deserved, it wouldn't be much.  But God wants more for the humanity He created.  And He made the way simple and easy, by doing the hard work Himself; through the Life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Give a listen:

Seriously, Should Women Wear Hats in Church?!!!

When we stop to consider some of the comments about gender and authority and propriety in chapter 11 of Paul's first Letter to the Church in Corinth (I Corinthians), it may seem very peculiar.  Some of the ideas draw upon first century Roman culture.  Some of the ideas draw from an order established at the creation of man, in the beginning described in Genesis.

At any rate, there are some useful principles which we can apply today; and still other standards  which it would be foolish to try and apply to 21st Century Western Society.

Paul speaks to responsibility and accountability in the context of leadership and also propriety in the context of worship.  He does this in ways that can get our hackles up if we are not careful to trust God for fair and just treatment as men and women of God.

God is not some chauvinist, oppressive monster that wants women to grovel before lame men who are unworthy of respect.  This chapter speaks to religiously emancipated women about propriety in worship in ways which echo the instructions found in 1 Corinthians Chapter 8 or Romans Chapter 14.

The Basic Good News

Despite all the information offered in the previous podcast, one thing was lacking: the simple gospel message that leads to salvation.  Jesus, a sinless man, died.  His death paid the debt for all sin.  If you agree that you have sinned, and believe God's word, that Jesus died for you, His death covers you too.

Faith in the finished work of Christ, saves from the endless consequence of our sin: separation from God.
Paul wrote to the believers in Rome "...the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord"

This is the meaning of the most popular verse in all scripture:
"For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
(found in the Gospel of John, chapter 3 verse 16)

This always gets shared every Sunday at the Communion table, but doesn't always make it into the podcast.

1 Corinthians 10 - God is Watching Out for Us

Paul reminds the church in Corinth about several historic events; true stories that happened in the course of the Jewish Exodus, from Egypt to the new land that God had promised.  He illustrates one simple principle to Christians by recounting that same principle at work in the nation of Israel.

God is faithful to His promises.
We can depend on that.
BUT we often don't, though.

In fact, when the people of God waiver...
sometimes, the consequences can be grave.
AND again, God is faithful to provide a way
a way through temptation to waiver.

Just: don't lean on your own understanding.
Rather, trust in the Lord with all of your heart.
He will direct our paths
As we (continue to) acknowledge Him in all of our ways.

If you say that you are walking with God, live like it.
You can do this!
He is doing it through EVERY willing participant.

What Exactly is an Apostle?

In the beginning of Chapter 9 Paul declares his 'apostle-ship'.  What exactly IS an apostle; and is there difference between capital 'A' and lower-case 'a' when we read this word?  This sermon makes the case that we are all 'sent-out' into the world.

Alva is a place where God has assembled an apostolic ministry to reach people He loves, who are desperately trying to live a life they haven't got (yet).  Alva Baptist is a fellowship who loves as God loves and shares the good news of God's favour.
